Lucky Twice

I wasn't able to thank you last year. So, now that I'm IT again, I won't pass up this chance to express my gratitude. Others may frown on me doing this note for such a fancy recognition. Some may not even agree at all why it was me. But I don't care. I love it!

I'm also thanking you on behalf of the other faculty members and staff in the college you have also recognized in last Thursday's program. I'm sure they were delighted to be noted in a special way by the students.

Good luck and I wish you a great year!

Happy Holidays!

HAROLD

DDJ Seminar Series August-September 2007

For August, we had Dr. Crispin Maslog as guest speaker. A retired professor from the Department of Development Journalism, Dr. Maslog talked about opportunities for journalism graduates. We chose the seminar topic in time for the orientation of incoming major students on the same day. Dr. Maslog also launched the latest edition of his book in the seminar.

A month after, we had a lawyer this time as guest speaker. Atty. Rafael Khan, lecturer from the College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman, delivered a seminar entitled "Media Law: More than just Libel." Most of the audience were students taking DEVC 20 (Fundamentals of Development Journalism) and DEVC 80 (Communication and Society).

Since the first semester will end in two weeks, there won't be a seminar in October. The DDJ Seminar Series will resume in November for the second

The first of the DDJ Seminar Series for AY 07-08

For this year, we are putting back the Department of Development Journalism Seminar Series. To kick off the series, we had two professors from the University of North Dakota, USA as speakers. They were Dr. Stephen Rendahl and Dr. Richard Shafer. They talked about journalism and culture. Both have taught at UPLB as visiting professors.

We are grateful to Dr. Crispin Maslog, a retired professor from DDJ, for having invited the two American professors to our seminar.

Sale it isn't so

After months of not having a major purchase, I went to the mall yesterday. I went to Glorietta prepared but with a budget on hand, of course. As usual, I went to the out-of-my-reach brands. I didn't know that a few of them actually were having a sale. I felt lucky to have gone that day, of all days! Happily, I went to check out the stores on sale.

Yes, they were on sale. But sale - how could I have forgotten?! - is relative! All of a sudden, I've developed an allergy to anything I was touching in the racks. In less than 10 minutes per store, I was smiling back again at the doorman, empty-handed.

So I went around the mall until I finally followed the SURF philosophy: buy stuff that is "'sing ganda, pero di 'sing mahal." Finally, by 8 p.m., I was carrying five paper bags.

No, they're not as expensive as those in the stores I first visited. But neither are they cheap. I would say that they are in the middle range. I actually have an eye for spotting items that are nice yet reasonably pric...

WANTED: Time Freezer

Just a few more days and it's one week down for May.

My plan to work on
my proposal seems only good on paper. I've never even gone past the
first step! I've been side-tracked with a lot of things last April ---
the testimonial program, faculty hiring, DEVC 190, etc. But now that
I've more free time, I need to really buckle down to work and finish my
proposal before the month ends. I might actually have to produce a
proposal a bit earlier if I'd be called by a panel at OVCI regarding my
renewal. For sure, they'd be looking for my proposal.

I seem to
have all that I need to start working --- an iBook, a variety of good
references and recent studies, fast internet connection, and, of
course, financial support provided by the college. But there is one big
problem, just when I thought twas only time that was my problem. I
actually have more time now. But I lack the most important thing ---
MOTIVATION.

Potah with a CAPITAL P!!!

Yes. I'm jealous of

One night only

I went to Manila yesterday to meet my friends. We went to the mall at the Serendra area, The Fort. It's a very nice place. We were too shy to take picture as we didn't want to look 'jologs' in front of the upscale crowd dominating the place. While enjoying our beverages at Chocolat, we put JM on the spot and asked him about his 'semi-vacation' and 'soul-searching'. The next day, before I left for LB, I took this picture at his porch.

It was 12 noon so it was literally blinding and hot outside! He lives on the 9th floor. I just love how this picture turned out. It looks like a mural. I stuck my hand holding my phone camera outside the glass door. The building on the left is actually ABS-CBN.

Title of the photo: Narcissist in the city.

Bow.
Reposted from my livejournal

April 24th, 2007

And the saga of the insomniac continues.
Hehe. Just a few hours ago, I was in Manila to attend the ceremonies
for the 6th Child-Friendly Newspaper and Journalist Awards. I was with
Dr. Suva. I actually didn't want to go because I had a very long day
managing the last few students who still have no placement for their
internship as of last week. I also had to organize the receipts of our
expenses for the AWARDS project. As it turned out, I just had to
accompany Dr. Suva. I also felt that it was my business to attend
because I supervised the 2 awards project - the other one, Community
Press Awards - last February and March.

So, even if I wanted
to just stay home and recover, again, from lack of sleep, off I went to
Manila. I wasn't prepared what to wear for the occasion. I don't have
anything new to wear. I decided to go casual. I actually always do. I
wore a classic white shirt, denim and a black coat. Kill me if I had to
we...
